Rudraksha beads should not be worn without sanctifying them. They should be blessed and empowered by chanting the specified mantras, performing the specific rites and rituals.

The "Shuddhikaran"(sanctification) pooja is performed prior to wearing any Rudraksha bead/mala. The sanctification ceremony follows steps like :

The Rudraksha bead is immersed overnight in oil.
Sit on an "Asana" (straw mat) facing east.
The beads are then washed while chanting the Shiva mantra "Om Namah Shivay" with either

"Panchgavya" which is a mixture of cow's dung, urine, raw milk (unboiled), "Desi Ghee" (clarified oil) and curd or
"Panchamrit" which is a mixture of raw milk(unboiled), honey, curd, "Desi Ghee" (clarified oil) and Ganga Jal.

After that the Rudraksha bead is washed with pure water(Ganga Jal) chanting the Sadyojaat Mantra :
"Om Sadyojaatam Prapadyaami Sadyojataajava Namah,
Bhave Bhavenaati Bhave Bhavasvamaam Bhavodbhavay Namah".
Then a sandalwood paste, "Ashatgandha" (a mixture of eight fragrances) and "Kesar" (saffron) solution is made. The beads are dipped in it for some time and are taken out while chanting the Vaamdev Mantra :
"Om Vamdevaya Namo Jyeshthaay Namah Shreshthay,
Namo Rudraay Namah Kaalay Namah Kala,
Vikarannaay Namo Bal Vikaranaay Namo Balaay,
Namo Bala Pramathanaay Namo Sarva Bhoot,
Damanaay Namo Manomanaay Namah".
While offering "Agarbati/Dhoop" (Incense), Aghor Mantra is chanted :
"Om Aghorebhyo Ghorebhyo Ghor Ghor Tarebhaya,
Sarvebhya Sarva Sharvvebhyo Namaste Astu Rudra Roopebhyah".
The Rudraksha bead is smeared with saffron chanting the Tatpurush Mantra:
"Om Tatpurushaay Vidmahe Mahadevaay Dheemahi,
Tanno Rudrah Prachodayaat".
Eeshaan Mantra is chanted on each bead :
"Om Eeshaanah Sarvavidyaanam Eeshwar,
Sarvabhootaanaam Brahmaadipati Brahmanaadhipati Brahma Shivome Astu Sadaa Shivom".
Then the specified mantra for each Mukhi Rudraksha is chanted on that bead.
These should be worn on a Monday morning after touching with Shivlinga.
After this Maha Mrityunjaya mantra is chanted nine times :
"Om Triayambakam Yajamahey,
Sungandhim Pushti Vardanam,
Urvar Ukamiva Bandhanan, Mrityor Muksheeya Mamritat".
After completing the steps described above, both hands should be joined and the individual should chant :
"Maale Maale Mahaa Maale Sarvashakti Samanvite
Chaturvargaa Tvayinyistah Tasmaan Me Siddhidaa Bhav".

Mantras are Sanskrit-invocations of the Supreme Being. Shaligram

Basically, saligrams are fossil-stones. Saligrams come in different sizes, color and shapes from round to umbrella shapes. In general saligrams are black stones found on the riverbank of Gandaki River. Sometimes we find reddish black, blue black or yellowish color saligram which are considered to be very rare. Different symbols and chakra formation on the inside and outside of saligrams are not the gifts of nature but are the contributions of river worms called Vajra-Keeta. Vajra Keeta takes shelter from saligram and during its stay makes chakra on the saligram with its teeth and nails which are harder than granite stone. There is a hole termed as vadana, meaning mouth, inside a saligram through which chakras can be viewed. Saligram stones are printed with various sacred symbols like sankha or conch, chakra or disc, gada or club, kurma or tortoise etc.
Vedic scripture like Vishnu Purana had detailed the historical versions regarding the origin of saligram. In the ancient times of gods and goddesses, a severe battle took place between Lord Shiva and demon Jallundhara and the battle continued for several days neither showing any signs of wining the battle. The chief reason for this was the devotions of Parvati, wife of Lord Shiva and Vrinda, wife of Jallundhara towards their husbands. Their devotions and faithfulness towards their husbands were acting as powerful protective shields and therefore neither of the two husbands was showing any slim chances of losing the battle. Jallundhara knew this and so disguised as Lord Shiva he went to goddesses Parvati to break off her faithfulness towards her husband. But Parvati with her divine power instantly became aware of the demon’s motive and demasqueraded the demon off his disguise. Parvati then suggested Lord Vishnu to implement the same scheme on Vrinda.
Obediently, Vishnu disguised himself as Jallundhara and went to Vrinda. Vrinda believing Lord Vishnu to be her husband surrendered to the physical intimacy. This broke off Vrinda’s faithfulness towards her husband and with this crumbled down Jallundhara’s protective shield woven by Vrinda’s devotion. Then immediately Lord Shiva demolished Jallundhara. When Vrinda came to know the whole truth, she got so furious that she instantly cursed Vishnu to turn into shapeless black stone. This very stone was later termed as saligram. Since Vishnu had to be turned into a saligram for a good cause that saved mankind from the tortures of demon Jallundhara, saligram was and is worshipped with very complete devotion and sincerity. In Vaishnavism, very rituals must involve the presence of saligrams.
Upon bathing saligram with water everyday, one can be erased off all the sins even the severe ones like Bramahatya, meaning killing of Brahmins and furthermore, by drinking the bathed water a person can attain physical, spiritual and mental gain. Such practice also releases a person from fear of death and assists in attaining eternal immortality. Even a damaged saligram can evoke its divine power for the welfare of mankind. It is a large evergreen broad-leaved tree which grows in the area from the Gangetic Plain to the foothills of the great Himalayas and the middle area of Nepal. Altitude-wise, its habitat starts from the sea-coast and goes up to 2,000 meters. Geographically, it is found growing naturally and abundantly in tropical and subtropical areas. Its trees are large, perennial and grow almost 50 ft to 200 ft in height. It has smooth light green skin. Rudraksha seed contains a rough surface with a hole running through it from top to bottom and this seed make up Rudraksha beads. Each seed also possesses vertical lines from 1 to 21 running down its surface, like the longitude lines on a globe. These lines are known as mukhis, or facets, and are natural formations of the seed. Seeds with one vertical line are known as one mukhi (one facet); those with two lines are two mukhi (two facets), and so on. The main trunk of Rudraksha tree is cylindrical and has circular section. Its bark is grayish white and rough in texture with small vertical lenticels and narrow horizontal furrows.
The branches of Rudraksha spread in all directions in such a way that while growing in natural habitat, the crown takes the shape of a umbrella. Its leaves look shining green externally and dull coriaceous internally. Its flowers bloom annually and are ovoid, conical and elongate, nearly 1 to 2 cm in diameter. These appear in April to May. The fruit is globose and drupaceous with a fleshy exterior. The beads are hard and tubercled from inside. Its fruit starts appearing in June and ripens by august to October. Rudraksha farming is a difficult process due to its slow sprouting from the beads which usually takes about 1 to 2 years depending on the humidity of soil. Rudraksha is basically grown in subtropical climatic region with temperature ranges from 25 to 30 degree centigrade. Once Rudraksha are planted it starts giving fruit after 7 years and thereafter for long time. In the single tree Rudraksha beads comes in all different faces at the same time but higher mukhis or faces are vary rare to find where most of Rudraksha beads are five faces Rudraksha beads come in seasonal pattern every year around mid august to mid October from the tree. The Himalayan Beads simply seem to be larger, heavier and more powerful due to the environment they grow in. Thus, environment and location plays a key role in Rudraksha plantation. Once its tree is grown it becomes easy to plant further trees.
